Hi Paul Thanks for the comment, I was probably having a bad day at the time, but the message I was trying to get over was one of 'why should the simple things hold back teachers in Norfolk'. For example - when a primary teacher see's the Microsoft…

We just don't do it........

You know that spooky feeling of deja 'vu?. Well was I surprised when the LEA support organisation told me over the phone ' we just don't support Windows Vista' - well truth be told I was'nt, but we are in the technology game here people.

I've got Year 3's running Windows Vista on there home PC when I am told in the school you can only run XP - does anyone out there have a forward looking LEA support organisation? I would love to know.

Mixing pain with pleasure as they say the Fizzbook is getti… Continue

The Spin is here!

Finally got the Spin today, which as you may tell I have been quite anxious to get my hands on. First view on getting out of the box were, 'neat unit compact and lightweight', the handle which adourns other Fizzbook models is as quite as 'in your face' on this model which is a good thing.

Turning on, boots in to Windows XP Home, abit slowly I think, my 4 year old would have probably gone to make a cup of coffee by the time it had loaded up, (thats a metaphorical cup of coffee for those who don'… Continue

The Fizzbook Spin

In the era of Minibooks that flood the market, I sit here an wait for the CityLink man to turn up with an evaluation Fizzbook Spin unit for me to play with for the week.

The Spin is the tablet version of the Fizzbook which has not quite hit the streets yet, all solid state I am led to believe with small enough keys and mouse for even the smallest fingers to use ideal for primary learners! Of course for £279, the thing that appeals is flippin the lid and making it into a writing device that can… Continue

Technology not made easy in Norfolk

A few weeks ago I had an excellent day at the John Innes Centre for he Norfolk ICT Conference, in the company of people like Russell Prue and John Davitt. Russell Prue gave an inspiring speech about 21st Century Education which put very broad smiles on people like myself.

However to move ICT forward in Primary Schools in Norfolk, there has to be co-operation, a good example is today I tried to download the new release of Internet Explorer 8, which has some good quick tips for our users such as… Continue

Kevin - Very good to finally meet you at the E2BN conference this week, I think that the event went very well and delegates seemed to get what they wanted from the event. Do keep in contact. best wishes Russell

You make some excellent points and not just relevant for Norfolk, how about menu based support services, allowing the school to choose exactly what they want and what they pay for? I worked on the UK's first managed service provision nearly 11 years ago now for Dudley. Schools sacrificed autonomy in favour for a more robust and supported infrastructure - the discussion still goes on, the same happened in Northern Ireland. Are Schools better off? Some clearly are, but not all. I think that if you have the skills and the support from the Head, ICT support specialists in schools should be able to take on more responsibility for their ICT provision. The Authority in Norfolk are interested and keen to progress ICT in schools and I am hopefully returning later this year to Norfolk to work again with colleagues. I hope that you get on well with your FizzBook Spin - I love them!!
